HISTORICAL BACKGROUND |
In 1808, Simon Landry's family were the first dwellers of Grande-Anse. Simon's grandfather, Alexis Landry, founded Caraquet in 1757. The first colony was probably established on the church's present site. In 1818, the government gave lands to three families: Rémi Landry, Jean-Baptiste Thériault and Jean-Baptiste Poulin. Later, two other families arrives: Bruno Poirier and Isaac Haché. One year later, the Thériault family moved a little further, where Anse-Bleue is now located; they founded this village which still has ties to Grande-Anse.
In 1808, the first dwellers of the village mostly worked in agriculture and wood harvesting. Today, the village is home to two fish and seafood processing plants, a peat moss harvesting business, restaurants, motels, a Shell gas station with general mechanics, a commercial services center, a bank and a credit union. There is also a modern arena Centre Edmond E. Landry, where we practice hockey and figure skating.
The village of Grande-Anse was incorporated as a municipality in 1968. It has a population of nearly 1000 and is situated at the West limit of the Acadian Peninsula and constitutes its gateway. Developed along route 11 (Acadie street in Grande-Anse), the village is situated on the tallest cliffs of the region and offers a unique view of the Bay of Chaleur. From this height, you have an impressive view of the Gaspesian littoral with all its diffferent shades of blue, from the navy blue of the sea to the dark blues of the Appalachian mountains.
Grande-Anse welcomes you to Acadie. Its two beautiful natural beaches, one situated near the wharf and the other one inside a cove, offer you the warmest waters North of Virginia. These beaches have been equipped to help you enjoy all the aquatic activities of the region. Go explore our marine heritage with a diving experience or go cod fishing in the Bay of Chaleur.
